Originally a monastery, Villa Erba was purchased by the Peluso family, who already owned the neighbouring Villa d'Este. The property then passed to Luigi Erba, brother and heir of Carlo Erba, one of the largest pharmaceutical industrialists of his era, who built a villa that mirrored the wealth and status of the family. The construction was entrusted to two architects: Angelo Savoldi and Giambattista Borsani. In those years the Erba family hosted famous artists and the villa was at the centre of an intense cultural activity.

Inherited by his daughter Carla, who married in Cernobbio Duke Giuseppe Visconti, the villa was home (during the summer months) to their son, the great director Luchino Visconti. At Villa Erba, no longer property of the Erba family, Luchino Visconti returned in his last years to complete the editing of Ludwig, one of his most important filmography masterpieces.
